Lampropeltis pyromelana knoblochi Range: Chihuahua Mexico Typical adult size: 3-4' Also known as the Chihuahua Mountain Kingsnake. The Tarahumara Mountain Kingsnake combines all the best traits of the pyromelana and other mountain species. They have brilliant clean colors, eat readily, breed with predictable success, and are very docile making them excellent "pets". L.p.knoblochi occur in only a small area of northern Mexico. This part of Mexico is often referred to as "Copper Canyon country, with beautiful limestone valleys. It is also home to the "Tarahumara Indians, from which it gets it's common name. |

Typically most knoblochi will fall into 3 general categories or types. This was first evident after 15 adults were collected and bred by Steve Osborne in the late eighties. Referring to the individual specimens by type makes it easier to communicate the general appearance among collectors and breeders. This is used only as a guide as some of the specimens are difficult to place in one category. Type I: The classic knoblochi (most commonly seen for sale) with 55-65 red or orange triads, a small amount of lateral zigzag patterning or simply a white lateral fused stripe, little to no red on top of head. Type II: Extreme high lateral zigzag patterns, high band counts (70-80), thick black bands and/or black speckling. Specimens in this category may also have reduced black, no crossovers, but at the very least will have a high band count. Type III: Extreme reduced black, clean bright colors, 10-60 % of red on top of head, and "clown faces". |
